In a nutshell, Texas Hold’em is the perfect blend of mathematics, strategy, psychology and luck. On top of that, because anyone, no matter how experienced they are, can win a hand, it’s extremely attractive proposition for novice players. Because there is an element of luck in the game, it means an amateur can, theoretically, beat the likes of Phil Ivey or Daniel Negreanu or any of the top pros in the USA given the right conditions.

To counteract this, the skill elements of the game are such that an experienced player will always win over an amateur in the long-run. Indeed, regardless of whether you’re playing Texas Hold’em in a limit, pot limit or no limit format, there are a certain amount of skills you can learn in order to improve your chances of success. However, before we delve into some top Texas Hold’em tips for playing at online poker sites in America, it’s important to breakdown the basics of the game.

The Basics of Texas Hold’em

Thankfully, the rules of Texas Hold’em are relatively simple and in this article we’ve outlined the basic mechanics of the game so that you can begin exploring its wonderful complexities.

Before we look at the specific details of a hand of Texas Hold’em we first need to establish some general rules.

  • In essence the aim of the game is simple: win the pot by any means possible.
  • In practical terms there are two main ways you can win the pot: by having the best hand or by bluffing.

Having the superior hand means that your cards are better than your opponent’s at a showdown and bluffing is where you force your opponent to fold before a showdown.

A hand of Texas Hold’em uses five cards which can be any combination of a player’s two hole cards (the cards they are dealt) and the five community cards. This means that a player can use one, two or none of their cards in conjunction with the five cards in the middle to make a hand ranging from a pair up to a Royal Flush.

With this in mind a player must measure the value of their two starting cards before any of the community cards are revealed and decide whether or not the hand is worth playing. If they feel the cards are too weak then they can simply fold. However, if they like their hand then they must either call or raise (the size of each will be determined by the table stakes and the previous action).

This process is repeated by each player at the table until everyone has either folded or met the minimum bet. (A point to note here is the each new hand starts with a player in the small blind and one in the big blind. These forced bets kick off the action and it’s the player to the left of the big blind who starts the action).

After all the pre-flop action has been completed the first three community cards (the flop) are revealed. At this point another round of betting ensues with players having the option to check (take a free card if no previous betting has occurred), bet or fold based on the current strength of their hand. This process is repeated on the turn (the fourth card) and then again on the river (the fifth and final card).

If at least two players are still in the hand by the river then a showdown takes place and the best five-card hand wins. However, if at any point during the hand only one player remains then they are declared the winner by default and thus scoop the pot.

This, in a nutshell, is the basic outline of Texas Hold’em poker and should be enough for you to begin grinding at the tables.

Five Things You Need to Know about Texas Hold’em

  1. Texas Hold’em involves two hole cards and five community cards.
  2. A player can use one, two or none of their hole cards in order to make the best five-card hand.
  3. Texas Hold’em can be played in a limit, pot limit or no limit format.
  4. Texas Hold’em at US poker sites can be played as multi-table tournaments, cash games or single table tournaments.
  5. One of the best ways to win at Texas Hold’em is to be as aggressive as possible.

Top Texas Hold’em Tips

Texas Hold’em is a relatively simple game to learn, but if you want to become one of the best players in the world it takes a lot of work. Indeed, players such as Daniel Negreanu, Phil Hellmuth and Phil Ivey have all played countless hours of poker and refined their skills over a number of years.

While it would be impossible to outline every strategic concept you need to consider at the poker table in this article, we can give you some bite sized tips that will help you become a more profitable player.

Cut Down the Amount of Hands You Play:

One of the biggest mistakes novice players from the United States make when they first start playing Texas Hold’em is to get involved in too many hands. Although the prospect of making a strong hand or bluffing our opponent is appealing, it’s can actually be a major drain on your bankroll if you get involved in a lot of pot. One important fact to remember is that if you play a lot of hands you will make a pair less than 2/3 of the time and this often means you’ll have to fold a lot post-flop. Secondly, if you do manage to make a hand it will be usually be weaker than average which means you’ll lose pots (and thus money) at showdown more often.

Be More Aggressive:

Coupled with a propensity to play more hands than is profitable, novice players will often adopt a passive strategy when they enter a pot. Instead of raising or re-raising they will usually limp or call and allow another player to take control of the hand. This is potentially fatal because it means the passive player is more likely to be bullied into submission and, thus, lose the pot. There’s an old adage in poker that you should try to remember if you want to avoid being passive and make more money: “If a hand is not worth raising, then it’s not worth playing.”

Always Try and Play in Position:

Position is king at the poker table and before you enter any pot you should consider where you are in relation to the button, the blinds and to any active players. Essentially this means you should play more hands the closer you are to the button because you’ll have the benefit of extra information. Sometimes playing out of position is unavoidable, but if you want to have the greatest advantage over your opponents, then you should always play in position.

In the US, Texas Hold’em is still the dominant poker game used to define ultimate champions and big money winners.

Biggest Winners in Hold’em History

Because Texas Hold’em has been the basis for the biggest poker tournaments in the world for a number of years and although players can earn $100,000+ in a single hand, these winnings pale in comparison to the $15,306,668 Daniel Colman won at the 2014 WSOP. After battling his way past the likes of Phil Ivey, Scott Seiver and Daniel Negreanu in the $1 million Big One for ONE DROP, Colman was able bank of the largest tournament hauls in history.

Topping Colman’s 2014 effort, Antonio Esfandiari banked $18,346,673 in the 2012 version of the Big One for ONE DROP. The Texas Hold’em MTT welcomed 48 players, but when the betting was done it was Esfandiari who clinched the title and more money than any other US online poker player in history.

New York is one of the states of America that most people know about alongside other popular locations like California, Texas and Florida. Likewise, New York has had quite a popular place amongst other poker-loving states, and it does in fact have quite the storied history there.

If we’re talking about when poker came to prominence in the state, then it would be appropriate to look back to the 1960s and 70s. This is when poker began growing in popularity within Ghoulash Joints, also known as Ghoulies. Most of the time, these joints were run by Eastern European immigrants, providing underground card gambling in back rooms. As it happens, it was within these Ghoulies that the three-time World Series of Poker Main Event champion, Stu Ungar began playing poker.

Ungar’s father, Isidore Ungar ran a bar and social club known as the Foxes Corner, which also operated as a Ghoulash Joint, offering up illegal gambling for players. It was there that Stu learned how to play Gin Rummy, which he would go on to play professionally in 1967, dropping out of school to do so when his father died. Ten years later, Ungar moved to the city of Las Vegas, taking his gambling reputation with him. He continued his success there, turning to poker and becoming one of the best in the industry by the 1980s.

It was due to his success that the popularity of poker back in New York was heavily bolstered, with Ghoulies seeing more and more people attending them for gaming. The underground poker scene would flourish throughout the 80s and into the 90s. Of course, Ghoulies weren’t only used for poker gameplay, but by hustlers and gangs, bringing much more of a criminal element to them. Yet, much of the poker activity moved on to neighbouring Atlantic City, New Jersey when the state legalised and regulated the game in 1993. That also provided a nearby location for avid poker players from New York to travel to and enjoy a few hands of cards.

Laws & Regulations In New York

As far as online poker is concerned though, this isn’t really something that has ever totally gotten off the ground. Prior to the 2006 UIGEA law that was brought into effect, some platforms were providing online poker to residents of New York. However, with the introduction of that law, most of those operators chose to pull out of not only New York, but the United States altogether. At various times, representatives have tried to introduce bills that would see the state make online poker a legal operation, but these haven’t made so much headway.

In more recent times, New York’s legislative periods have failed to really bring anything to light as far as the regulation of online poker is concerned. A pair of bills were submitted in 2018, but the legislature failed to act on them in any way. A key lawmaker did say that he would prioritise sports betting over anything else going forward, which doesn’t put poker in the best position. Then again, this is potentially something that was only to be expected when you consider that the Supreme Court overturned the PASPA law recently, allowing for states to introduce legal sports betting at their will.

Is it Legal to Play Poker Online in New York?

The current state of online poker in New York is that it’s actually considered to be quite the illegal operation. This falls in line with the legality of online casino gaming, which is also considered not to be a legal activity according to the laws of the State of New York and wording of same (Article 225 of the New York Penal Law. Now, keep in mind the word, “considered”. There isn’t a specific law that blocks online gambling via casino or poker games in New York. Therefore, players accessing online sites that provide such games are not prosecuted if they are found out.

Yet, how is it possible for a New York resident to play online poker if there aren’t any legal and regulated sites offering such? Well, the only way is to do so by accessing a foreign-based poker room. This doesn’t mean that you need to travel to a foreign country – it basically means that the online site itself has its server in an alternative location to the US.

In fact, many operators chose to move their servers to locations outside of the United States when the UIGEA law came into effect in 2006. So, it’s not uncommon to find online poker rooms providing their services out of such countries as Costa Rica or Antigua. Many of these sites will accept registrations from players based in New York, so there’s no problem with being able to play at them.
That being said, certain poker sites may offer their services to the US market but restrict certain states from registering. New York has been labelled as one such state at a few different platforms. In this instance, if you reside in New York, you won’t be able to access the poker room or its sign-up form. Fortunately, various ones still remain in existence that cater to poker players based within the state.

How to Select a Good Online New York Poker Room

It can be quite confusing to find so many online poker sites available to you. You only need to enter a search into Google, and you’ll find masses of platforms showing up in the results. Of course, not all of those sites can be considered as specifically being the best for players. Some of them will doubtlessly be scam sites, and you need to avoid those like the plague.

Fortunately, we’ve made things a little bit easier for you, because we’ve looked into all of the sites that cater to New York poker players. We have browsed through their sites, checked into their games, experienced their service and are able to provide you with details of which the good poker rooms are. This way, you don’t have to go through the trouble of looking through a search engine’s results and then navigate through the poker room itself to find one that fits. You can simply check out the ones that we recommend here instead.

In reviewing the different New York poker rooms, we’ve made sure to look out for all of the features that matter. Primarily, we’ve made sure that all of the sites that we recommend are either licensed by a proper authority or come with highly trustworthy and respected setups. Gambling licences will ensure that a poker room has a set of rules and regulations that they must stick to. And if a site doesn’t possess one of these, then there’s a strong likelihood that it will just proceed onwards with its own way of doing things.

As it happens though, there are still some online poker rooms that don’t hold an official gambling licence and still provide a thoroughly customer-friendly service. This relates to the visual appeal of the site, the deposit and withdrawal process, the customer support options and much more. Therefore, we suggest that you check through our collection of recommended New York poker sites before you go ahead and sign up to one.

Is Playing Poker Online Safe in New York?

Online texas holdem for money nyc marathon

Just because something isn’t specifically legal doesn’t make it unsafe. And, as we mentioned with regard to New York’s online poker scene, participating in such isn’t specifically illegal either. It’s just not really got any sort of regulation set up to monitor it. Even though this is the case, if you decide to register at an online poker room that is based offshore, it’s not something that can automatically be considered as an unsafe practice. There are various things that affect the safety of something.

As far as online poker gameplay is concerned, you should always make sure that you’re joining a respected and trustworthy online poker room. Check out one or more of our recommended sites to ensure that you’re doing so. There’s nothing worse than being caught out by an unlicensed and scam site. You never know what’s going to happen with your deposited money in those circumstances. More people have found themselves not getting their pay-outs and then not being able to take back their deposit, and all of that can be easily avoided by simply doing your research beforehand.

Additionally, you need to make sure that the platform you decide to join also promotes responsible gambling. This can be displayed in any number of ways – either by providing links to gambling addiction care or by having its own responsible gambling section set up for you to navigate through. An unsafe online poker room would never promote responsible gambling, because it wouldn’t link up with something that it’s pretty much fighting against.

The best piece of advice to undertake is that as long as you find a recommended and highly valued poker room, you can’t go far wrong. Then, from the sites that provide such, just whittle it down by finding out if it provides you with your preferred payment methods, if it has a helpful customer support team, if there’s a good selection of poker games on hand etc. Remember, your safety and security when playing online poker should be a number one priority – for both you and the poker site.

Online poker offers a great variety of variants, and those all are available to those who reside in New York. The popularity of poker has seen an increase in the variants most poker rooms provide and that same popularity has seen multiple rooms creating unique poker variants to cater unique products to poker players.

The most common variants you will come across online include Texas Hold ‘em, Omaha, Omaha Hi-Lo, Seven Card Stud Hi-Lo and Seven Card Stud. While there are others, these are those most frequently player and most commonly available.

Possible Payment Methods at New York Poker Rooms

One of the main affectations of the introduction of the UIGEA law was that card transactions and bank transfers were heavily monitored for anyone trying to transfer money into gambling sites. New York was certainly affected by this, meaning that players who did manage to register at a poker room from within the state couldn’t successfully make a deposit most of the time. Banks simply wouldn’t allow such transactions to go through in accordance with the UIGEA rules.

This is the way that things stayed for a short while, but it didn’t take long for online poker rooms based elsewhere to come up with alternative options for New York players to utilise. Fortunately, the online world has welcomed cryptocurrencies into its fold for various payments. Multiple poker rooms have also adopted this payment method, giving US citizens the possibility of depositing and withdrawing through such options as Bitcoin and Ethereum, for example. This method has actually fast become a favourite of many players because cryptocurrencies aren’t linked up to any central financial institution. Therefore, there’s nothing to control where you send the funds to or receive them from.

Cryptocurrencies often provide players with the possibility of depositing and withdrawing for free as well, which is another big bonus to using them. And finally, when you use cryptocurrencies, the withdrawal process isn’t as long as more traditional methods. So, you can request a withdrawal, wait for the processing period to complete and then receive the funds instantly to your wallet. There’s little question that using Bitcoin Cash or Litecoin or any other cryptocurrency has helped with US citizens being able to successfully play their favourite poker games online.

The only other alternatives to bank transfers and card deposits, is to make use of a Money Order or Person to Person transfer. The issue with these methods is that they frequently come with additional fees that you’re required to pay and, in terms of withdrawals, take longer to complete. Additionally, they will usually have maximum deposit limits attached to them too, which are considerably less than the limits surrounding cryptocurrencies. That being said, they do provide another alternative for New York players to make use of for payments.
